Years after teaching their final lessons to their students, a group of retired teachers continue to bring their educational wisdom and expertise to students at Sullivan Elementary School. After meeting for lunch to reminisce about their years in the classroom, the teachers decided they wanted to continue to their passion for education and make a difference in their community and school. That’s when the group, known as C.A.R.E., Creative Activities Reinforce Education, formed a plan. 

Two times each year, the group organizes two fun-filled days for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. The two-day event centers around a designated theme, and includes special guest speakers, displays and several stations where students can experience hands-on learning. 

Recently, the group hosted its Fall C.A.R.E. Days, “The Body Works” for Sullivan Elementary School students. The event featured special guests, including Dr. Dustin Ellis, a family practice physician in Sullivan; and Kathy Pirtle, a family nurse practitioner in Sullivan, who talked with students about healthy bodies. 

Some of the learning stations included: building a model of spinal column, learning about red blood cells, and using a hose to measure the length of a small intestine. Also, a real brain was available for students to view, as well as model skeletons. Anatomy and science students from Indiana State University and Sullivan High School also assisted with the activity stations.

SES is thankful for the teachers and volunteers who dedicate their time to provide this wonderful learning event for our students!
